Atomic Energy Plans & Policies Officer, Nuclear and Counterproliferation Officer, Nuclear Officer, Nuclear Plans and Policies Officer, Nuclear Power Research Project Officer, Nuclear Reactor Engineer, Nuclear Systems and Components Repair Officer

Purpose of a Submarine Nuclear Propulsion Plant Supervisor - Reactor Control

The Military has been a pioneer in the use of nuclear energy. The Military uses nuclear energy for power plants, strategic weapons, and defense systems. These systems are carefully designed, operated, and must be maintained to operate optimally and in compliance with the highest of safety standards.

Nuclear engineers direct research and development to capitalize on the energy released in nuclear reactions. In the Military, these engineers oversee projects that apply nuclear technology to weapons systems as well as nuclear power plants. They are responsible for maintaining the security of nuclear weapons, and the safety of all personnel that work with nuclear materials.

What a Submarine Nuclear Propulsion Plant Supervisor - Reactor Control Does

Conduct research on nuclear engineering problems or apply principles and theory of nuclear science to resolve problems concerned with release, control, and utilization of nuclear energy Monitor test results and perform analysis to determine stockpile (safety and reliability) condition Perform research on both new and fielded materiel to determine vulnerabilities to nuclear weapons effects and to improve survivability (nuclear hardening) Provide technical assistance in target analysis and employment planning of nuclear weapons Conduct vulnerability analysis of personnel response to nuclear weapons effects Recommend policies and prepare instructions for protecting personnel and property from the immediate effects of a nuclear attack Supervise the security of nuclear weapons, access, denial, weapon emergency disablement/destruction, treaties, and agreements that impact nuclear weapons and nuclear readiness/training Administer repairs to nuclear reactor machinery, components and associated auxiliary equipment Conduct and administer research, design, and development of nuclear power plant projects Control and coordinate engineering and planning of nuclear propulsion plant work Direct programs of reactor safety, construction, overhaul, maintenance, modification, testing, and refueling Formulate, evaluate, and recommend policies governing efforts with regard to particular phases of atomic energy, such as conduct of tests, nuclear power projects, weapons development, or radiological defense

Training Provided for a Submarine Nuclear Propulsion Plant Supervisor - Reactor Control While Serving

Officers typically enter the Military after they have completed a four-year college degree; enlisted service members can transition to officer positions through a variety of pathways and earn a degree while serving. Learn more about becoming an officer, here.

Nuclear engineers in the Military are given many opportunities to build upon the skills and education they bring with them to the job. Job training for nuclear engineers primarily consists of classroom instruction and on-the-job learning in various training environments. Like other officers, they complete a comprehensive training program covering responsibilities, military structure and etiquette, traditions, and leadership development. Depending on their specialty, job-specific training content may include:

Advanced mathematics such as differential equations Nuclear propulsion Thermodynamics Reactor dynamics Systems and components of a nuclear propulsion plant Associate systems of full-scale nuclear plants

Typical Submarine Nuclear Propulsion Plant Supervisor - Reactor Control Work Environment
