Music and musicians play an important role in military life. There are musical performances at every major military event, such as important ceremonies, parades, concerts, festivals, and dances. The Military is one of the largest employers of musicians in the country.
Musicians in the Military play not only for members of their own service branch, but also to engage the public. They play indoors in theaters, concert halls, and at dances, and outdoors at parades and open-air concerts. They perform many types of music, including marches, classical, jazz, and popular music. They also travel regularly.
Perform all applicable styles of music, including marching band, ceremonial band, concert band, classical, jazz, ethnic, and popular music compositions Provide technical guidance to junior grade personnel Advise higher authority on band status, equipment maintenance and requirements, personnel training, and operational efficiency Perform in a variety of ensembles, ranging from solo performance to full concert band Tune an instrument to a given pitch Transpose moderately easy music Organize, instruct, train, counsel, and evaluate musicians and senior musicians of the Music Performance Team (MPT) Supervise MPT operator maintenance Manage, supervise, and perform as an instrumentalist, music arranger, vocalist, or audio and lighting engineer in military band activities Analyze musical requirements and provide appropriate musical support Plan, schedule, and coordinate rehearsals, ceremonies, master class, and performances
All enlisted service members complete basic military training, which includes time spent in a classroom and in the field, and covers tactical and survival skills, physical training, military life and customs, and weapons training. Although musicians must be musically proficient to enter the service, music training is given to new band members. Training length varies depending on musical specialty. Musicians in the Military will gain skills through regular rehearsals, individual practice, and on-the-job experience. Job-specific training content may include:
