Military aircraft are used to fly hundreds of missions each day for transport, patrol, reconnaissance, combat, and flight training. Helicopters and airplanes need frequent servicing to maintain safety and be operationally ready.

Aircraft mechanics inspect, service, and repair the Military’s fleet of helicopters and airplanes. These mechanics troubleshoot and maintain the aircraft’s structure, engines, and other components, including mission-critical features such as weapons and electronic warfare, and coatings for stealth purposes.

What a Helicopter Power Plants Mechanic, T-58 Does

Inspect, service, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair aircraft engines, auxiliary power units, propellers, rotor systems, powertrain systems, and associated airframe and systems-specific electrical components Service, maintain, and repair aircraft fuselages, wings, rotor blades, fixed and movable flight control surfaces, and bleed aviation air, hydraulic, and fuel systems Disassemble, repair, reassemble, adjust, and diagnostically test turbine engine systems, subsystems, and components Inspect and identify aircraft corrosion for prevention and repair; apply corrosion control treatment to aircraft metals Evaluate maintenance operations and facilities for compliance with directives, technical manuals, work standards, safety procedures, and operational policies Perform ground handling and servicing of aircraft and conduct routine aircraft inspections Perform end-of-runway, postflight, preflight, thru-flight, special inspections, and phase inspection administrative duties Supervise and perform aircraft jacking, lifting, and towing operations Direct aircraft battle damage repair and crash recovery operations Operate and maintain electronic warfare systems Ensure funds and resources are projected to support the maintenance effort, and are managed to optimize mission accomplishment Solve maintenance problems by studying drawings, wiring and schematic diagrams, technical instructions, and analyzing operating characteristics of aircraft engines and propellers Design, repair, modify and fabricate aircraft, metal, plastic, composite, advanced composite, low observables, and bonded structural parts and components Perform helicopter and propeller maintenance including rotors, gearboxes, and drive accessory repairs Advise on structural and low observable repair, modification, and corrosion protection treatment with respect to original strength, weight, and contour to maintain structural and low observable integrity

Training Provided for a Helicopter Power Plants Mechanic, T-58 While Serving

All enlisted service members complete basic military training, which includes time spent in a classroom and in the field, and covers tactical and survival skills, physical training, military life and customs, and weapons training. Aircraft mechanics are offered advanced technical training that prepares them to maintain specific aircraft types and systems. Training content may include:

Repair of hydraulic, fuel, and electrical systems Repair of aluminum, steel, and fiberglass airframes and coverings Precision measurement and equipment calibration Engine disassembly, inspection, and repair Soldering techniques

Typical Helicopter Power Plants Mechanic, T-58 Work Environment

Aircraft mechanics work in aircraft hangars and machine shops located on air bases or aboard aircraft carriers. They may work outside on the airfield, or in climate-controlled shops and hangars.
